How to transform the look and feel of your home using cushions

Cushions are one of the simplest and most effective ways to transform the look and feel of a space instantly.

With the right cushions in an appropriate arrangement, you can create a unique piece of artwork on your sofa that acts as a statement piece for your room.

This year, Toni Thornton Art has released a unique collection of cushion covers featuring sections of the coveted abstract and floral print collections.

These sections of our most popular artworks have been carefully curated to complement a range of interior spaces and colour schemes.

Here, we explore how you can improve your home’s interior decoration by simply decorating with stylish contemporary cushions.

Where to display cushions

Decorating with cushions may seem complicated at first, but by following a few simple rules you can create a modern and luxurious space to be proud of.

Stylish cushions can be used throughout your home in a number of ways, but many interior designers agree that the best – and most interesting – place to display cushions is on a sofa, bed or other seating areas.

Abstract cushions are the best way to enhance these spaces in a modern and aesthetically pleasing way.

The first step is to take a look at your existing cushions, and the arrangement you have, as well as the different shapes and sizes.

Feel free to experiment, moving them around and changing the space you use them in.

Switching your combinations on seating and bedding alike will help you to get creative, and gain confidence to mix and match.

There are no set rules when it comes to decorating with cushions. but here we discuss some of the key elements that help inform your placement.

Colour

Every space has a colour palette you’ll likely want to stick to, and the right cushions can help accentuate and complement your chosen colour scheme.

Floral cushions, for example, can be used to add a fun pop of colour to your space, making a great statement piece.

Equally, they can be used to match the hues and tones of surrounding cushions, creating an elegant aesthetic.

Layering

Layering is the perfect way to decorate with cushions in any space, whether it is on a bed, sofa or other seated area.

It is a useful technique to fill space in a balanced and stylish way, starting with larger cushions in the corners and slowly moving inwards scaling down.

An striking statement cushion can then be used in the middle of the arrangement to turn your sofa, bed or seating area into a mini work of art.

If you are unsure how many cushions to use, the general rule for beds and sofas is to have a ratio of 2:2:1 with a total of five cushions.

Start by using two of the same size and colour on either side, then add two more in front that are slightly smaller and perhaps a complementary colour.

Finish by placing one smaller accent cushion at the front and centre of your piece.

Texture

Toni Thornton Art cushions are perfect for layering because they provide a unique textured appearance that complements solid coloured cushions.

Cushions should be varied in arrangement, according to their colour, texture and pattern, to create an ensemble that is pleasing to the eye.

Try arranging them in odd numbers, or so that they are only on one side of the sofa, because these tend to be the most visually-appealing setups.

Filling

Even the most beautiful cushion cover can be ruined by the wrong insert, which is why knowing how soft or firm you would like your cushion is key.

If you are looking for a filling that will hold its shape and proudly display a cushion’s design, then foam or other synthetic inserts are best.

On the other hand, natural fillings like feathers will not retain as much shape, but will last longer than foam.

They can also be plumped to restore the desired look.

Often a balanced mix of natural and synthetic will help to create a cushion that is both aesthetically pleasing and can retain its shape, but is also comfortable to sit on.

How to Care For Your Cushions

Caring for your cushions is essential to keeping them in good condition and ensuring they maintain their integrity.

Each Toni Thornton Art cushion cover is made of a Leenane fabric cotton/linen blend, and has a black panama backing fabric that requires special care.

All of our cushion covers are machine washable, and will retain their quality, but we would always recommend that with fine art print cushions, the cover is turned inside out and gently washed at no more than 30 degrees Celsius.

It is recommended that for Toni Thornton Art abstract and floral cushion, the inserts should be no larger or smaller than 55x55cm.

Inserts that are too large risk damaging the structural integrity of the cushion cover. Equally, inserts that are too small can ruin the aesthetic appeal of the design by not allowing it to be adequately displayed.
